I really didn’t mean to visit this jewelry show. I don’t need any more necklaces or earrings. But I had to go over to pick up two shirts I had ordered from Sabine Schomber and - purely by chance - she was hosting a showing of these baubles by her friend, Laura Di Vincenzo.
Ok, I knew full well there was going to be jewelry going on. But I had no idea it would be so me. I should have guessed that anyone Sabine would invite into her world would share her same aesthetic (which is also so me).
Laura is a paintings restorer and more used to working on sixteenth century frescoes that stringing tiny beads. But the two do have something in common. The technique she uses is one that dates back to the Renaissance and uses string tied in tiny knots to hold the beads, pearls, amber and semi precious stones in place. In fact, the intricate knots become small works of art themselves, almost sculptures in miniature.
Even though the necklaces are surprisingly affordable I held myself in reign. I left with only the two shirts I had ordered from Sabine. And yes, one pair of earrings. But they were a gift from my step mother who was with me.
I am very tempted to go back tomorrow, (Friday 20) when the jewelry will be on show again from 4 to 8pm. Because they would make perfect Christmas presents, right? (Have I already used that excuse? ).
