minerva roof garden {drinks + view}

Most of you know that come 7 o’clock, a cocktail is what I’m thinking about. Sometimes a perfect martini will do, sipped while I make dinner. But while on vacation, or up in Todi, the cocktails usually come with the perfect garnish: a view. One definitely improves the other.

And while I live in Rome, and often take the city for granted, I realize that most of world comes here for vacation. And so are probably expecting views with their Negronis.

A few weeks ago I met some visiting New Yorkers for what has got to be one of the most elegantly Roman drink/view combos in town: the rooftop of the Grand Hotel della Minerva. Located smack next to the Pantheon, the hotel bar takes up the best corner of their terrace.

Get there by 7 and settle in for the spectacle of a Roman sunset. As the light changes, the blue sky starts to turn pink, the already glowing roof tiles seem to catch on fire and the Pantheon’s dome hovers against a city scape that is right out of a Zeffirelli opera production. Elephants and all.

  2. One of my favorite views in Rome!
    A spritz makes it that much better.

  3. Before renting an apartment in Rome we used to stay at the Santa Chiara, in a balcony room where I would sit in the morning and watch the sun rising over the Minerva Terrace.
    Maybe this time I will go over and get that negroni with a view.

  4. And a cocktail to match the sunset! We've stayed at the Albergo del Senato, which also has a lovely roof bar + view, but the Minerva looks even more spectacular!

  6. Sigh, I have never done a roof top bar in Rome, for shame! Next time for sure.
