My first trip to Europe was over Christmas in 1971 when i was 6. My family are reformed Jews in Baltimore. That first trip included Innsbruck for Christmas and then to Rome on St Stephens Day, then Munich. In Rome, The Grand Hotel Roma Flora, the Vatican, the same small restaurant near our hotel for 3 dinners in a row, dining with the owners. Such memories, have always wanted to go back over Christmas. 40 years later, my husband and I, with our 14 and 16 year old daughters, fly to Rome on Christmas Day. I can't wait to be there again for the beautiful sites and smells of the holiday season. Your photos and this memory add to my excitement!

What a gorgeously written article. I am not kidding when I say that it gave me goosebumps at the end. I am so glad that you still have that piece of majolica!

I have only been in France for ten years, but still appreciate that shift towards food and away from "gifts" (because the great food is as you have said one incredible gift). Did I have foie gras on brioche tonight just because? Well, yes I did.

As I get older, I am increasingly aware that food and family are the real hallmarks of the holidays. I am also reminded of a Polish Blessing that my grandfather (and now my Italian father) recite every year before our meal: 'Let's hope we are all together next year'.

And my house guest (our mother) remembers wandering around after dinner and coming upon a church. Hearing music, we went inside and saw midnight mass. She also remembers specifically telling us that Bifana would bring us presents when we got back to Rome.
